CHAPTER ELEVEN

An hour later, on the way back to her grandmother’s house, Pilár spotted Lucas talking to a group of young people. As she crossed the street, he shouted her name, then added, “Watch out!”

A black van sped towards her faster than she could move her feet. Lucas ran in her direction, threw his weight against her, and they fell to the ground. Tires screeched on the asphalt, and the smell of burnt rubber surrounded them.

“Are you okay?” Lucas asked, concern etched in his eyes as he looked down at her.

“I … I think so.” Lucas slowly rolled away, sat up, and looked in the direction of the speeding van.

The people he’d been talking to stared at them as if they couldn’t believe what they’d seen.

“Did you see a license plate number or anything?” Lucas asked as they rose, taking deep breaths. “You could have been badly hurt, or even killed.”

“No, everything happened so fast,” she hugged him, then touched his cheek. “Thank you, you saved my life.”

“I’d do anything for you.” He leaned in for a kiss, closing the space between them.

Pilár pulled away and took several steps back, frowning. “What are you doing?”

His gaze caressed her face as he said, “You’re a beautiful woman, and I’ve always felt something for you.”

Glancing toward the sidewalk, Pilár dusted herself off. “Luc, you’re a dear friend, I …”

“Say no more, I’m sorry, I meant no offense.” He edged further away. “Please forgive me.”

“Don’t worry about it.” She smiled to ease his obvious discomfort.

“That seemed calculated,” he said, clearing his throat. “Is there anyone who would want to harm you?”

Pilár bit her bottom lip, an unconscious habit when she was in deep thought.

“What is it?” Lucas asked. “You can tell me anything.”

“I think my sister is in trouble.”

He took her arm and guided her onto the sidewalk. “What kind of trouble?”

Pilár told him everything that happened since he left her with Senhor Belo.

“This is a lot. Do you think Rita is behind this?” Lucas asked.

“I hope not, but I can’t be certain.”

“Maybe you should head back to the U.S.” Lucas suggested, running a hand over his hair. “You’ll be safer there.”

“No, not until I find out what’s happening and know that my Avó is safe.” Pilár’s phone buzzed, and she pulled it out of her pocket. “I have to go. I need to pick up Maya from the airport.”

“At least let me walk you back to your place.”

“Thanks, Luc, I appreciate that.”

They walked back to her apartment in silence, each wrapped up in their thoughts, but Pilár could not lose the chill that settled over her skin. She glanced around, feeling that someone was watching their every move.
