CHAPTER ELEVEN
An hour later, on the way back to her grandmotherâs house, Pilár spotted Lucas talking to a group of young people. As she crossed the street, he shouted her name, then added, âWatch out!â
A black van sped towards her faster than she could move her feet. Lucas ran in her direction, threw his weight against her, and they fell to the ground. Tires screeched on the asphalt, and the smell of burnt rubber surrounded them.
âAre you okay?â Lucas asked, concern etched in his eyes as he looked down at her.
âI ⦠I think so.â Lucas slowly rolled away, sat up, and looked in the direction of the speeding van.
The people heâd been talking to stared at them as if they couldnât believe what theyâd seen.
âDid you see a license plate number or anything?â Lucas asked as they rose, taking deep breaths. âYou could have been badly hurt, or even killed.â
âNo, everything happened so fast,â she hugged him, then touched his cheek. âThank you, you saved my life.â
âIâd do anything for you.â He leaned in for a kiss, closing the space between them.
Pilár pulled away and took several steps back, frowning. âWhat are you doing?â
His gaze caressed her face as he said, âYouâre a beautiful woman, and Iâve always felt something for you.â
Glancing toward the sidewalk, Pilár dusted herself off. âLuc, youâre a dear friend, I â¦â
âSay no more, Iâm sorry, I meant no offense.â He edged further away. âPlease forgive me.â
âDonât worry about it.â She smiled to ease his obvious discomfort.
âThat seemed calculated,â he said, clearing his throat. âIs there anyone who would want to harm you?â
Pilár bit her bottom lip, an unconscious habit when she was in deep thought.
âWhat is it?â Lucas asked. âYou can tell me anything.â
âI think my sister is in trouble.â
He took her arm and guided her onto the sidewalk. âWhat kind of trouble?â
Pilár told him everything that happened since he left her with Senhor Belo.
âThis is a lot. Do you think Rita is behind this?â Lucas asked.
âI hope not, but I canât be certain.â
âMaybe you should head back to the U.S.â Lucas suggested, running a hand over his hair. âYouâll be safer there.â
âNo, not until I find out whatâs happening and know that my Avó is safe.â Pilárâs phone buzzed, and she pulled it out of her pocket. âI have to go. I need to pick up Maya from the airport.â
âAt least let me walk you back to your place.â
âThanks, Luc, I appreciate that.â
They walked back to her apartment in silence, each wrapped up in their thoughts, but Pilár could not lose the chill that settled over her skin. She glanced around, feeling that someone was watching their every move.
